In loving memory ~<\/p>\n
\nRita Beertema passed away on Oct. 6, 2024 with her family by her side. Rita was born in Amsterdam Holland May 15, 1934. Immigrated to Hazelton with her husband and two small children in 1966. She worked as a sewing teacher for a bit at the Hazelton high school. With her husband they built the Beertema’s Clothing and Appliance store. Rita did the buying for the clothing store and always gave her honest opinion on patron’s choices of clothes. She was also known to keep the patrons in line at the Tri Town theatre!<\/p>\n
\nRita retirement years were spent in Hazelton and winters in Mexico where they made lifelong friends. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many baby blankets. <\/p>\n
\nRita is survived by her son Peter (Hailey and Luke) and Henny and Kia (Scott and Max). No funeral at Rita’s request.<\/p>\n
\nThe Old Sewist<\/p>\n
\nHands too shaky, <\/p>\n
\neyes too weak,<\/p>\n
\nThe final acceptance, <\/p>\n
\nthe reality bleak.<\/p>\n
\nNo longer able to stitch <\/p>\n
\nwith fabric and thread.<\/p>\n
\nThe sewing room got packed up <\/p>\n
\nand here’s what she said,<\/p>\n
\n“This room gave such solace as <\/p>\n
\nI sewed at this desk.<\/p>\n
\nHere’s where I created, <\/p>\n
\nlet my soul have its rest.<\/p>\n
\nSo I’ll pack up the remnants, <\/p>\n
\npass them on to others.<\/p>\n
\nPerhaps a retiree or some <\/p>\n
\nthrifty new mothers.”<\/p>\n
\nAs I helped, <\/p>\n
\npacking up her old life,<\/p>\n
\nI looked at each item <\/p>\n
\nwith wide open eyes.<\/p>\n
\nDon’t hoard that fabric or <\/p>\n
\ndelay projects too long.<\/p>\n
\nBring joy with your crafting <\/p>\n
