{"id":135778,"date":"2025-07-30T14:50:24","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T14:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interior-news.com\/2025\/07\/30\/bc-magicians-magic-moment-leads-to-historic-win-at-olympics-of-magic\/"},"modified":"2025-07-30T14:50:24","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T14:50:24","slug":"bc-magicians-magic-moment-leads-to-historic-win-at-olympics-of-magic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interior-news.com\/2025\/07\/30\/bc-magicians-magic-moment-leads-to-historic-win-at-olympics-of-magic\/","title":{"rendered":"B.C. magician&#8217;s magic moment leads to historic win at &#8216;Olympics of magic&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Surrey-based magician Billy Hsueh won the prestigious Invention Award at the 2025 FISM World Championships of Magic, known as&nbsp;the&nbsp;&ldquo;Olympics of Magic&rdquo; event.<\/p>\n<p>In July he was in&nbsp;Turin, Italy, to perform&nbsp;a winning illusion that serves as &quot;a&nbsp;modern, impossible take on the classic &#39;Think-a-Drink&#39;&nbsp;plot,&quot; a signature routine in magic where a single container is used to pour multiple drinks named by the audience.<\/p>\n<p>The international FISM convention&nbsp;(F&eacute;d&eacute;ration Internationale des Soci&eacute;t&eacute;s Magiques), held every three years, represents the highest level of competition in the art of magic, and the&nbsp;Invention Award is reserved for magicians whose contributions advance the technical or conceptual boundaries of the craft.<\/p>\n<p>The last Canadian to win a&nbsp;FISM award was&nbsp;Shawn Farquhar in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Watching Billy win an award at World Championships of Magic was indescribable,&quot; Farquhar said in a news release. &quot;To be there for this historic moment was both memorable and moving. He&rsquo;s not just making magic, he&rsquo;s moving our art forward.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Last spring&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.surreynowleader.com\/local-entertainment\/drink-pouring-surrey-magician-didnt-fool-penn-teller-or-did-he-7930686\" target=\"_blank\">Hsueh impressed American magic duo Penn &amp; Teller on their&nbsp;<em>Fool Us<\/em>&nbsp;TV show<\/a>, but ultimately didn&#39;t fool them. Pre-recorded on&nbsp;stage in Las Vegas, he entertained with a&nbsp;bartending trick where he turned water into wine and also one fruity martini using a &quot;special&quot; tea pot made in Taiwan, where Hsueh was born.<\/p>\n<p>A longtime Fraser Heights resident, Hsueh (pronounced&nbsp;<em>Shway<\/em>)&nbsp;has performed&nbsp;internationally over the past two decades.&nbsp;He co-founded&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a cmp-ltrk=\"Article Links\" cmp-ltrk-idx=\"1\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/cabaretofwonders.com\/?utm_source=surrey%20now-leader&amp;utm_campaign=surrey%20now-leader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/cabaretofwonders.com\/?utm_source=surrey%20now-leader&amp;utm_campaign=surrey%20now-leader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" href=\"https:\/\/cabaretofwonders.com\/?utm_source=surrey%20now-leader&amp;utm_campaign=surrey%20now-leader%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" mrfobservableid=\"99ea4eed-7712-4720-aa2a-99a56fd91847\" rel=\"noopener noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cabaret of Wonders<\/a>, staged monthly on the fourth Tuesday&nbsp;at the Hidden Wonders Speakeasy theatre, located behind a fake storefront in New Westminster.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Hsueh&nbsp;is&nbsp;<a cmp-ltrk=\"Article Links\" cmp-ltrk-idx=\"2\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.surreynowleader.com\/entertainment\/presto-hes-president-worlds-largest-magic-organization-now-led-by-surreys-billy-hsueh-2990429\" href=\"https:\/\/www.surreynowleader.com\/entertainment\/presto-hes-president-worlds-largest-magic-organization-now-led-by-surreys-billy-hsueh-2990429\" mrfobservableid=\"7de3789f-f40f-4c2b-be67-29042248cb72\" target=\"_blank\">a past-president of The International Brotherhood of Magicians<\/a>, a 15,000-member organization founded in
