Hazelton Wolverines overpowered the Kitimat Ice Demons 13–2 on Oct. 18, taking full control after Kitimat’s second goal and dominating the remainder of the game at Tamitik Arena.

Kitimat opened the scoring early in the first period, with Tayden Fowler-McNab finding the net twice — the second assisted by Ayden Baldo and Derek Wakita — to give the home team a brief 2–1 lead.

That goal would be Kitimat’s last of the night.

Hazelton responded quickly. Tanner Wort tied the game just over a minute later at 9:19. From there, the Wolverines controlled every aspect of the game. Jonah Bevington added back-to-back short-handed goals at 17:30 and 17:47 to close out the first period with Hazelton leading 4–2.

The Wolverines kept pressing in the second. Dawson McKenzie scored a power play goal at 1:29, followed by Wort’s second — also on the power play — at 3:02. Hazelton added three more before the end of the period: McKenzie netted his second, Bevington completed a hat trick at 12:04, and McKenzie struck again at 18:05. Daniel Kernaghan scored 39 seconds later, sending Hazelton into the final frame with a 9–2 lead.

Bevington added his fourth goal early in the third, and Hazelton piled on with goals from Sean Maktaak, Kernaghan, McKenzie — marking his fourth — and Maktaak again at 15:37.

A second-period penalty against Kitimat’s Wil Dejong for charging at 2:24 helped fuel Hazelton’s early surge, as the Wolverines capitalized with two power play goals in quick succession.

Hazelton sits first in the standings with seven points from three wins and one overtime loss, followed by Quesnel and Williams Lake with six points each. Kitimat remains at the bottom with four straight losses to start the season.

Kitimat will look to rebound on Oct. 25 when they visit the Rampage in Prince Rupert. Hazelton’s next game is set for Nov. 1 on home ice against the Smithers Steelheads.
