The Sticky Files

This is the time of the year when going for a cool, sweet treat is top of mind.

I had a brief discussion with a friend about going out for ice cream. I think it is a special treat and you need to actually go out for it. It tastes better and is more of an experience. We like to bike to the ice cream stand.

You won’t ever find a generic tub of it in my freezer. My friend, however, was the opposite. He said the cheaper the better. He has a hard time enjoying expensive ice cream and prefers a cheaper version straight from the grocery store.

The older I get, the more often I say, to each their own. That is why we have options and that is why the world is a beautiful place.

But the last time we went out for ice cream, my usual favourite wasn’t on the menu and I gasped. What was I to do. I actually scanned the entire list this time, there were so many choices! How does anyone choose? And why have I always just gone for my usual Tiger Tail?

I mean, how could I not ….  orange-flavored ice cream with a black licorice swirl. It's a classic Canadian flavour. The black licorice adds a contrasting flavour and visual element to the orange base, resembling a tiger's tail. It is beautiful and delicious.

However, I tried a new peanut butter concoction and it was heavenly. My daughters always pick something brightly coloured, like bubble gum or cotton candy. In my view, the grossest-looking fake flavours, but they enjoy them. And they always offer me a lick, which I always politely decline.

In Canada, chocolate is the most popular, followed closely by vanilla and then mint chocolate, maple walnut, and butterscotch.

Across the globe, vanilla is the most commonly eaten flavour of ice cream. Which makes sense, it goes with everything.

It got me thinking, after my favourite flavour was gone, what does an ice cream flavour say about you, if anything? One expert suggested the taste for your favourite ice cream is set during childhood and tends to remain consistent throughout your life.

According to Reader’s Digest, people who choose vanilla are impulsive, idealistic risk-takers. People who like strawberry are often tolerant, devoted, and introverted. Chocolate lovers are flirtatious and seductive. Mint chocolate chip lovers are argumentative. Rainbow sherbet lovers are pessimistic. Rocky Road lovers are aggressive. Coffee lovers are dramatic. Butter pecan lovers are conscientious.

Of course, there is a quiz online that will tell you more. I took a Buzz Feed quiz and the result was not very exciting. Apparently, I like sweet and simple things. “You love nothing more than to be content,” the answer said. Well, no, duh, this is a quiz about what your favourite ice cream flavour says about you.

I am not sure how much of this is true, but maybe it will help you pick the next time your usual is sold out. Or maybe it will make you rethink all of your life choices.
