When Vic Swan decided to retire in 2006 as publisher of The Interior News, and I was going to take on that role, Vic and I had a number of conversations about how to go forward.

We agreed we needed a sales manager, as I wanted to continue to hold the role of managing editor. Vic said he had someone in mind — Grant Harris. I remember saying quite clearly, if you can get him… get him.

It was a decision nobody regrets.

The Interior News got very lucky when Grant said, “yes”.

Smithers, in fact, the entire Bulkley Valley community, as well as myself, have been very fortunate to have Grant in our lives. It’s not hyperbole when I say he is the genuine article.

In the nearly two decades I have worked with Grant, there was, to my knowledge, not one legitimate complaint — not one — from a co-worker, client or community member. And when you work on or run a small-town community newspaper, it’s darn near impossible not to have ticked off someone at sometime.

Professionally, he was knowledgeable, honest, hard-working and community-minded.

Personally, he was empathetic, caring and authentic.

I’m proud to call Grant my friend and he deserves a long, rewarding and happy retirement.
