Coast Mountain College to close Hazelton campus

Coast Mountain College is permanently closing their Hazelton campus on June 30, 2026.
“Closing the Hazelton campus was a really difficult decision but, with finite resources, it made economic sense to focus bricks and mortar operations on three robust campuses: Prince Rupert, Terrace, and Smithers,” said Dr. Laurie Waye, President and CEO. “Rather than having a dedicated campus in the Hazelton area, the college will offer courses in this region in other ways.“
This comes after the college's announcement on Sept. 5 about the need to reduce annual expenditures by $4 million to prepare for future years without the same levels of revenues from international student tuition from previous years.
Executive Director, External Relations Heather Bastin said the Hazelton campus has had declining student enrolment for a number of years now, so staffing and maintaining it created overhead costs that can be better used for training delivered in more economical ways in this region.
The college said it will continue to provide educational opportunities in Hazelton through community spaces on an as-needed basis. The mobile training unit will also be deployed to the region for future trades and academic offerings.
The college does have some scheduled programming including a Carpentry Foundations course that is still scheduled for 2026.
Bastin added the future of the building will be discussed by the board of governors in the coming months.
"If the board should decide to sell the building, it is worth knowing that the disposition of assets process by a public college is dictated by BC’s Ministry of Infrastructure, in order to maintain the government’s ability to offer new or enhanced services to local communities, by keeping assets within the government service sector, when possible," she explained.
