A 30-year-old hunter was rescued near Mount Atna on Oct. 15 after sustaining injuries while in the “Icy Pass” area, according to a Kitimat Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) press release.
Eight GSAR members responded after being tasked by BC Ambulance Service. Four members were flown by helicopter to reach the injured man, who was treated at the scene before being transported to the Kitimat Airpark. Care was then transferred to BC Ambulance Service paramedics for further assessment and treatment.
Two GSAR members accompanied the man on the flight, while two others remained on scene until the helicopter returned for them. The release confirmed the subject “was safely located and is now receiving appropriate medical care.”
“Kitimat GSAR extends its appreciation to the Kitimat Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service, Summit Helicopters and the RCMP for their collaboration and support during this response,” the release stated.
The organization also reminded the public that search and rescue teams across British Columbia are made up of trained volunteers who respond at all hours and in all weather. “Kitimat GSAR encourages everyone venturing outdoors to be prepared, carry the Ten Essentials, and leave a trip plan before heading out,” the press release added.
