A pilot died in a plane crash in the Nanaimo River Road area early this morning.

In a press release, Nanaimo RCMP said reports of a crash in a wooded area near Twilight Way began coming in at 3 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27.

The plane, a Sealand Flight Cessna 172, originated from Sealand Flight school in Campbell River.

“We are devastated,” said Bill Alder, Sealand Flight president, in a statement. “Aviation is a small community, and Sealand Flight is like a family. Our hearts go out to the pilot’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Police are on scene and the investigation is ongoing, said Const. Sherri Wade, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson.

B.C. Coroners Service and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada will be investigating, according to Wade, and and the coroner has been contacted for comment.

The Transporation Safety Board confirmed it is aware of the situation and is working with police to gather information.

More to come.
