Highway 5 tanker rollover causes environmental clean up near Rayleigh

RCMP report and investigation is underway along Highway 5 north of Kamloops after a tanker spilled fuel across the highway. The highway remains closed in both directions. No injuries were reported.
Clean up efforts and assessment to potential environmental impact is underway following a fuel spill on Highway 5 on Saturday. Next update by Drive BC will be at 3 pm Sunday.

On Sat. Sept. 14 a fuel tanker trailer rolled over on Highway 5 near the Tournament Capital playing fields north of Kamloops spill fuel and shutting down the highway in both directions.
Traffic backed up on Highway 5 on Sunday afternoon near Tolko mill near Heffley Creek following a fuel spill that closed the road in both directions overnight.

Highway 5 is now open one lane northbound and south bound.

A single vehicle trailer rollover occurred on Highway 5 north of Kamloops near Rayleigh involving a tanker truck loaded with fuel on Sept. 14, Cpl. Brett Urano of Kamloops RCMP told Black Press at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

"The time of incident was approximately 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night resulting in a fuel spill and the cause is still under investigation."

According to an earlier press release issued by Cpl. Urano, the tanker truck had its trailer flip over and fuel was leaking from the trailer. There were no reported injuries and Highway 5 north of Kamloops remains closed "to allow crews to clean up the spill."

“We request the public’s patience while crews clean up fuel and remove the vehicle from the highway. We are continuing to investigate with our partners to determine the cause of the incident. If you have any video or witnessed the crash please contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000,” says Urano. 

Highway 5 north at Palmer-Forsythe Road (north of Rayleigh) is closed in both directions and is expected to be closed for a few more hours due to specialized spill cleanup.

The closure continues to impact residents and travellers along Highway 5 in the North Thompson Valley, forcing drivers to choose detour routes that may result in long lineups and waits. 

There is currently an estimated one-and-a-half hour wait at the McLure Ferry.  An assessment of the spill is in progress. Possible detour is Hwy. 24 turn off at Little Fort or Westsyde Road north of Barriere. Drive BC reports alternate routes available via Highways 1, 97 and 24.
